Effective January 1, 2001 all drivers in the State of Alabama that have been convicted of an drunk driving offense will be required to carry Sr22 insurance. The State of Alabama will begin auditing 1,500 or so drivers per week for proof of auto insurance.

If insurance is not provided at the audit, then the owner of the vehicle must pay a $100 fee for reinstatement. One year later, the owner will be surveyed again, if requirements are not met, then a four-month suspension and a $200 reinstatement fee will be required.
