Do I have to get SR22 insurance in order to reinstate my driver’s license? Is an SR22 filing expensive?

Wisconsin state does not require auto insurance, so it can be confusing when you are required to get insurance to file an SR22 form. State law says that an SR22 filing is not required for a first offense of driving intoxicated, so if this is your first offense, you will probably not have to get SR22 insurance. If this is your second or third DUI offense, you will be required to file an SR22 form with an insurance company. The typical SR22 filing period is 3 years in Wisconsin, but make sure you contact the Wisconsin DMV or Department of Transportation to verify how long you must carry your SR22 insurance for.

SR22 insurance can be expensive, especially if you are not used to paying insurance at all, but there are a couple things you can do to try to find cheap Wisconsin SR22 insurance. The most important thing to do is your research. I always recommend comparing quotes from 3-5 different insurance companies to make sure you find the cheapest rate possible. Once you find a good quote online, call the insurance company and ask about any special discounts they may offer. Try to keep your driving record as clean as possible for the next couple years and your rates will go back to normal.
