I have a Connecticut non owner SR22 insurance policy. Will this policy cover me if I drive a car that belongs to someone in my household? Does it matter if they are a family member?

A non owner SR22 insurance policy is designed to provide you with liability insurance coverage while you are driving someone else’s vehicle because you do not own a vehicle yourself. It will not cover you if you drive a car that belongs to a family member that lives in the same household. For example, if you want to drive your dad’s car and you live with him, your non owner policy will not cover you if you get in to an accident.

If you do not live with the family member, the rules may be a bit different. I would have the family member call their insurance company to see if you would be covered if you drove their car just to make sure. Also, make sure you do not drive someone’s car that has no insurance at all. A Connecticut non owner policy is designed to be a secondary insurance for any excess that might need to be covered in case of an accident and will not provide enough coverage if it is the only insurance being used. The insurance on the vehicle you are driving would be primary.
