Missouri SR22 Filing Period

Missouri SR22 Add comments

I live in Missouri and I got a DUI.  What is SR22 auto insurance and how long must I maintain an SR-22 filing according to Missouri state law?

An SR-22 filing is a form issued by an auto insurance company that is submitted to the Missouri MVDL which provides proof that the policyholder has the minimum liability insurance coverage required by the state.  The SR22 filing also guarantees the Missouri MVDL that the insurance company will notify them if the insurance policy lapses at any time.

In the state of Missouri you need an SR22 filing to reinstate your driver’s license if you have gotten a DUI, been involved in more  minor moving violations in one year than the law permits, have had suspensions from unpaid fines or parking violations, or had any uninsured accidents.

The SR-22 filing period can vary from state to state.  In Missouri the SR22 filing period can be from 1 to 3 years but more serious drunk driving cases could require a longer filing period.  During this period, you cannot let your SR22 insurance policy lapse or your driver’s license will be suspended and the SR22 filing period will be extended.
